Success Stories: “She’s on Fire” by Horizonte & Mr Vegas on NRJ radio

At MusicDiffusion, more than just distribute music, our artistic directors like to collaborate and bring good opportunities to our artists members, like we did for Horizonte and Mr. Vegas since their first collaboration on the single “Shake” powered by MusicDiffusion.

This first release reached many radios, and was in french club charts for many weeks. There, it has even been use by the famous TV shows “Les Anges”.

Along this, MusicDiffusion had also permit another one of its talented artist, Haylen, to collaborate on this summer hit with ragga-dancehall star Mr. Vegas, by signing the official french version.

“She’s on fire”, the second single from Horizonte and Mr. Vegas, with its fabulous collection of remixes by famous DJs like Mico C, Julien Creance, Yves Larock, Greg Di Mano, Hopperman or still Outwork is a new club killer track.

This new track even started to appear on NRJ club charts, which is the #1 musical radio in France with an average of 6 millions listeners each day.

We would like to congrats the artists for this new achievement which shows again, that independent artists with good tools can do today as well than artists signed with a major!

And you, do you like the vibe of Horizonte and Mr. Vegas? Tell us in comment!

Songflow shutting down, how to transfert your music catalog to MusicDiffusion for free?

After Zimbalam, another music distributor has shutting down some weeks ago: Songflow. It might come as a shock to some music creators out there, but for us, this was not a surprise.
At MusicDiffusion, we think that offering 100% free or giving 100% of royalties to music creators is only a marketing model, but not a long business term model that the music distribution requires.
You want to be paid your royalties, now, and also in the future, without changing your distributor every year right? You also want your music distributor to regularly be able to invest and propose you new tools and new ways to make money with your Music.

With a heavy heart I am sharing the news with you that Songflow will cease to operate in early 2019. Our aim with Songflow was to offer you, the independent artist, a solution to distribute and earn money with your music in a simple, honest and user friendly way. From day one we’ve been amazed by how all of you have used our platform to promote your music and establish yourselves in the digital music age. Yet, it has become clear that continuing to operate Songflow, while at the same time offering a top tier service, is becoming commercially and operationally unattainable – Thomas van Wijk

Obviously for the people who already were using Songflow platform, they will have to find a new home
At MusicDiffusion, the transfer of any catalog is free. So Songflow users can already move their catalog to MusicDiffusion by create an account in a minute, and then by upload their tracks with the same ISRC codes in their dashboard. When this is did, they just need to contact our team here that will proceed to the update of any catalog to MusicDiffusion for free.
If you need to deliver new music to the stores with us, find out our plans and prices here. But be sure that with MusicDiffusion, you are running with the best and cheapest music distributor on the market as partner, and the only music distribution platform builded by artists and musicians for artists and musicians. Music Publishing Explained for Musicians

Are you a songwriter, artist or producer looking to make extra money from your songs ? We would be surprised if you answered no to that ! Of course, you can go it alone, but once you get to a certain point in your music career, you might want to get some help. This is where a music publisher comes in.

music-publishing-explained-for-musicians-1

A GUIDE TO MUSIC PUBLISHING

WHAT DOES A MUSIC PUBLISHER DO?

Music publishers can help you earn money from your songs in a number of ways and will actively look for ways to use your music on your behalf.

The most common way that a publisher will use your music on your behalf is by licensing your tracks out to be used in the media, including TV, films and adverts. This is called synchronisation or ‘sync’. Your publisher will also be responsible for issuing the licenses and making sure you get a good deal.

Publishers generally charge on a commission basis, which usually works in your favour, as they will only receive income if you do. This gives them the incentive to secure you as much income as possible. The percentage that they take depends on your contract with them and you should always seek legal advice when negotiating an agreement.

Alternatively, another way some music publishers help artists is by finding people for you to collaborate with and co-write with or for.

Finally, a publisher’s role also includes collecting the income from uses and the licenses that they issued. They ensure that you get the money that is due to you and that what you receive is correct.

music-publishing-explained-for-musicians-2

THE BENEFITS OF MUSIC PUBLISHING

Sync can be a useful form of income, offering you not only royalties but also an upfront fee, usually in the hundreds or thousands of pounds, as well as a decent amount of exposure.

Over the years, especially since Napster (You surely know that story..) sync has become more and more important for artists, so it’s worth looking into. Sync usually involves signing to a publisher and/or record label.

In addition to sync deals, by collaborating and co-writing you will be able to add more songs to you repertoire, particularly ones that are perhaps slightly different from your usual style. This can be beneficial as it gives you a more varied catalogue, opening you up to more opportunities.

There is also the direct benefit you get from it, which is not just in songwriting but any form of collaboration that is cross promotion. If you collaborate, then you’re exposing yourself to your partner’s audience, which should get you more fans.

COPYRIGHT AND PUBLISHERS

The role of the Publisher is based on copyright, which is the rights that you have for your music.

Copyright is split into two main sections: copyright in the song (known as publishing rights) and copyright in the sound recording (known as master rights). The publisher only deals with the publishing right, which is the songwriting side and includes the music and lyrics.

Traditionally, a record label will own the master right, which is basically the right to use a particular recording of that song, but if you’re a self-releasing artist or producer then you will most likely own this right yourself.

In a publishing agreement, you will generally assign the publisher your publishing copyright, to use and license your songs on your behalf. This means you are no longer allowed to do this yourself.

DO IT YOURSELF

If you’re not ready for a publisher or if you’re not interested in assigning your rights, you can do it yourself or register to MusicDiffusion publishing administration. MusicDiffusion which is associated with Most Wanted Music, one of the greatest independent Music Label, can also help you to bring you placement opportunities and to collect your rights for a small fee, read more about here.

Visualizing 40 Years of Music Industry Sales

THE CHANGES OF MUSIC INDUSTRY

The record industry has seen a lot of change over the years, and especially music sales.

The 8-tracks system took a short-lived run at the dominance of vinyl, cassettes faded away as compact discs took the world by storm, and through it all, the music industry saw its revenue continue to climb. That is, until it was digitally disrupted.

Looking back at four decades of U.S. music industry sales data is a fascinating exercise as it charts not only the rise and fall the record company profits, but seismic shifts in technology and consumer behavior as well.

THE LONG FADE OUT

For people of a certain age group, early memories of acquiring new music are inexorably linked to piracy. Going to the store and purchasing a $20 disc wasn’t even a part of the thought process. Napster, the first widely used P2P service, figuratively skipped the needle off the record and ended years of impressive profitability in the recording industry.

Physical vs. Digital sales

Napster was shut down in 2002, but the genie was already out of the bottle. Piracy’s effect on the industry was immediate and stark. Music industry sales, which had been experiencing impressive year-over-year growth, began a decline that would continue for 15 years.

THE RINGTONE ERA

While acquiring music was as easy opening Limewire on your desktop computer, transferring that new T-Pain track to a flip-phone wasn’t a seamless experience.

This brief gap in technology – before smartphones hit mass adoption – brought us the ringtone era. Distribution was controlled by mobile carriers, so ringtones were a comfortable gateway for the record industry to get a taste for digital-based revenue. In 2008 alone, they injected over a billion dollars of revenue into an industry that was getting used to gloomy forecasts.

PADDLING UPSTREAM

Though services like Spotify and Pandora haven’t replaced the money pipeline that CD sales provided, they have reversed the industry’s tailspin. For the first time this millennium, record industry posted an increase in revenue for two consecutive years (and likely a third in 2018).

It took a while for consumers to warm up to paying for a premium music subscription, but today, there’s a solid basis for optimism. Music streaming is now the most common format for music in the United States, and the RIAA reports that streaming now makes up nearly half of the market.

Music Streaming Subscriptions

THE END OF PHYSICAL FORMAT?

Gone are the days when people would line up at the music shop for a hot new release. In fact, CD sales are down 80% in the past decade. Today, physical format sales only account for 17% of the industry’s revenue.

There is, however, one bright spot in physical format segment: vinyl. In 2017, vinyl sales hit 25-year high after making a slow and steady comeback.

“Vinyl is written in stone. I think if it’s made it for 120 years now, it’s here forever.”

Music distribution: What every artist needs to know

Music Distribution is about making an impact more than making something available.

Even if you’re a Grammy-winner putting out your 10th studio album, you need distribution for your music.

The songs have to move from you to your listeners. The problem is your listeners access music in dozens of different ways, in hundreds of different places. That’s where music distribution comes in.

Let’s break it down.

What is music distribution?

According Google, “distribution” is:

  • the action of sharing something out among a number of recipients.
  • the action or process of supplying goods to stores and other businesses that sell to consumers.

Music Distribution is both of those things. A third-party such as MusicDiffusion takes your music and handles:

  • Digital distribution, making your music available to download stores and streaming services platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora Premium, Amazon, etc.
  • Monetization services, helping you earn money for the usage of your music on YouTube, Facebook, in TV shows, and more.

Why do I need a distributor for my music?

Your should ask yourself “Why can’t an unsigned artist get their songs onto Spotify and Apple Music directly?”

To put it clear, you as the artist are not their customer. Your fans are their customers. These companies don’t want to take on the substantial customer service and development burden of dealing directly with millions of musicians. That’s where distributors come in.

At MusicDiffusion, our principle client is YOU — and we create the systems, artist tools, communication channels, and informational resources you need so you can upload your music ONCE and make it available worldwide in a successful way.

Imagine having to create separate accounts and upload your music and artwork files for each and every digital music platform! Imagine the accounting headaches! Imagine the emails in your inbox!

MusicDiffusion serves as a buffer between the creator of the music and the outlets that make that music available. But more importantly for you, we save you — the artist or label — a ton of time and work.

The eight most valuable aspects of music distribution through MusicDiffusion

1. A wide partner network of DSPs and media outlets

You want to make sure that when your music gets out there, it gets OUT there, worldwide, in every possible place listeners are looking for you. MusicDiffusion will deliver your music to all major stores and platforms worldwide, so you can rest easy that you’ve got coverage.

But let’s be real. To varying degrees based on your genre and location, most of your activity is going to come from a handful of giants.

Some of the most important digital music services in the United States and Europe are:

  1. Spotify – The leader in interactive music streaming, with both paid subscription and ad-supported options.
  2. Apple Music – Apple’s powerful on-demand streaming service, with a heavy focus on curated playlists.
  3. iTunes – The biggest player in the music download business since its launch in 2004.
  4. Amazon – The undisputed giant of online retail has both download and subscription streaming options.
  5. Google Play – The easiest way to access digital music with an Android device.
  6. Tidal – Offering high-fidelity digital music and exclusive content at a premium to subscribers.
  7. YouTube – Though known as a video platform, YouTube is actually one of the dominant players in music streaming and discovery.
  8. Pandora Premium – The paid interactive offering from the popular internet radio service.
  9. Deezer – An intuitive interactive streaming service competing for global listeners.

The thing is that Platforms rise and fall in popularity with some frequency, so you need to be everywhere.

2. Speedy music delivery to digital platforms

MusicDiffusion has long-standing relationships with the big digital music platforms, and we’ve developed a distribution system that combines fast delivery with manual (human!) inspection of every release, so if you spelled a track title incorrectly or listed the wrong publisher for a cover song, we’ll catch it!

Yes, MusicDiffusion can deliver your music to our digital partners in a heartbeat, but are you really rushing your release so quickly that you need it live RIGHT NOW with zero strategy?

Let’s plan this out. Let’s spend some time so you can take advantage of all the opportunities MusicDiffusion can offer, including:

[But okay okay, sure, if you just got the masters for your album and you want the music live by Saturday, we’re not going to say no.]

3. Trust and reliability

In 2018 we revolutionized the independent music industry, giving independent artists and music labels their first chance to reach a worldwide audience on their own terms and at the best price.

Since our founding we’ve knocked down the barriers to digital distribution, as well as:

All of this is done with one mission in mind: empower independent artists and music labels, let them keep their rights and decide what’s best for their own, and pay them every single month. We’re immensely proud, and every day we feel honored by the thousands musicians who’ve entrusted us with one of the most important things in their lives, their own music.

4. A sensible fee structure

There’s a cycle of growth and decline for every music release. This is the nature of things.

It’s not easy to pay a large annual fee in order to keep your music on digital download and streaming platforms once sales for that older material are on the decline. Those annual fees can add up; the larger your catalog gets, the more you pay each year to keep all your music available.

You definitely don’t want to feel the pressure ten years down the line to drop another few hundred bucks in annual fees, otherwise your older stuff which is no longer selling that well is gonna get removed!

The smarter approach is to release a lot of music, build your catalog over a lifetime, put all that music to work for you, and NOT worry about annual fees. That’s why MusicDiffusion partners with you; we only make money when you do.

5. Robust services

With MusicDiffusion’s standard distribution, you get much more than digital distribution to outlets like iTunes and Spotify.

With MusicDiffusion, you get digital distribution plus:

  • YouTube monetization
  • Shazam Recognization
  • sync licensing
  • free online marketing tools
  • and much more

With our MusicDiffusion Publishing package you get all of that plus worldwide publishing rights administration, helping you collect global publishing royalties that would otherwise be very difficult (if not impossible) to collect without a publisher, including:

  • All mechanical royalties from Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming sites. These are generated from every single stream
  • All international mechanical royalties from download stores like iTunes. These are generated from every single sale
  • All performance royalties from streaming services (like Spotify), radio, TV, live concert performances and much more
  • Global YouTube publishing administration for any video on YouTube that contains your music
  • Hundreds of other sources of songwriting and publishing royalties from around the world

6. Clean and detailed metadata assurances

All indicators point to the fact that we’re approaching an era where digital outlets will demand correct and thorough details about every track on their platform, including songwriter info, publishing splits, and more.

Luckily for you, MusicDiffusion has been requesting this kind of information from our artist and label clients since its opening. While that might take you a few more minutes to complete the submission form, it also means you’ve taken care of something that will almost certainly be required by digital services down the line.

7. Curatorial and editorial reach

We don’t just send your music to our partners and wish you the best. We want to find the most noteworthy releases, the best new music, the overlooked gems of our catalog, and tell the world about it.

Here’s how:

  • Thousands of music-buyers and music professionals receive our Discover Music newsletter.
  • With our own famous music label Most Wanted Music, we also have a team that is dedicated to finding and promoting the best new releases to our digital partners’ editorial teams, seeking opportunities for official Spotify playlist placements, iTunes banners, and more. You can submit your music for consideration HERE.

8. Accessible artist support

We’re approachable. You can get a hold of us. We have a detailed online Help Center so you can get your questions answered 24/7. You can email us and we’ll respond quickly. And yes, you can chat directly with us (during business hours).

MusicDiffusion gives you so much more than just digital music distribution

We hope you’ll consider us for your next release, because yes, we can deliver your music lightning-fast to all major music platforms, but mostly for all the other stuff we provide — the extra reach, the manual metadata inspection, the strategic release options. That “other” stuff is anything but extra. That’s the way to making an impact more than simply making your music available.

How to choose the best music distribution for you?

Part and parcel of getting your music out there into the world is ensuring that you can be found in all the right stores. That’s where digital distribution comes in.

We say “right” because, not everybody will want full coverage in every store, and appropriateness of certain services or platforms will be down to your judgement but generally most artists will likely want to get their music onto many of the key online stores and streaming platforms like iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Shazam and so on.

There are a few ways of doing this.

Go Direct

Firstly, you could try to create a label or artist account with each of the platforms and distribute things completely by yourself – however you’ll struggle with platforms like iTunes or Spotify, and other larger stores, since they won’t want to deal directly with you of your label. 99% of the time they will work with distributors and aggregators instead.

That more or less counts this method out, unless you’re looking to get into a handful of small, quite specific stores only (or only wish to deal with somewhere like Bandcamp exclusively).

Distributor

Alternatively you could set up your own small label (a wise move, since many stores will want a label to exist for any releases).

Even if you’re a solo artist, releasing just your own work, a token label name and setup would be worthwhile. Once set up – you could approach a digital distribution company and sign a contract with them for a year or so, working with them to figure out the best distribution options for each release, and entrusting them to handle the setup and aggregation.

Digital Distribution Platform

The third option, which is probably going to be most popular is to sign up with an aggregator or digital distribution platform.

This will allow you to upload your own music, setup the relevant information and artwork and then have your music beamed out to all the stores of your choice (although this may be restricted by the platform and their current aggrements).

This third option is what companies like MusicDiffusion, Tunecore, CDBaby, Distrokid, and countless other companies offer – all with varying levels of price, service, features and so on.

Choose Very Carefully

The most important thing you can do before you jump in, is weigh up your options and choose your distribution platform very carefully. Since changing platform, or moving your releases elsewhere, is not as easy as you might imagine.

Making the wrong choice this early in the game could lead to a fair bit of regret down the line, when you realise the mistakes you’ve made.

So we’d like to cover a number of things we should think seriously about before choosing a distributor or aggregator of choice.

Profit Percentage Cut

This is essentially the amount of money you get back from the distributor after they have taken their commission fee from your sales profit.

Some distributors will give you 100% of the sales profit, some will only pass back 90%, some even less. Usually a 100% profit cut from the distributor means you’ll be charged in some other way, either from upload fees, or recurring fees. At MusicDiffusion, our members get 90% royalties, and we use to think that a 100% royalties reversed is a commercial lie. You can check MusicDiffusion pricing plans here.

Basic Fees

Distributors can charge you fees in a number of ways. Some clear, some a little more hazy.

There could be a sign-up fee. This is a flat fee for joining with them.

You may also be charged a “label registration” fee, in order to set up your label with stores that require it. This often takes the form of a custom label name more than anything else.

On top of that (or alternatively) you could be charged monthly or yearly fees to use the service.

And if none of the above apply, you will likely be charged to upload your release. Commonly there is a set of 2 or 3 options for uploading releases. A single, an EP or an album. Each will have an associated fee, and amount of tracks, or length of tracks will determine which type of release you’re dealing with.

Some distributors opt for a per-track fee instead. This is the case for MusicDiffusion which propose 3 plans: free upload to Spotify, 2.99€ by track to deliver to all major stores and platforms. And we also have an unlimited plan to distribute how much artists and releases you want for only 15 €/Year. If you stop the subscription, your catalog stay online ! You can check MusicDiffusion pricing plans here.

Other Fees

Many distribution platforms make their money via extra costs incurred, when you want to do something beyond the basic distribution setup. This can involve numerous things.

Anything from extra stores (beyond a core offering) to iTunes pre-orders, Youtube monetisation, Shazam registration, digital booklets, extra detailed reports, or UPC codes.

Again, it’s about making sure you know exactly what fees are involved, and what you’re getting. If you’re not sure, there’s no harm in checking the FAQs or emailing sales to make sure.

MusicDiffusion has all options included into our plans, Youtube, Shazam, ISRC Codes, future stores or whatever you need. You can check MusicDiffusion pricing plans here.

What Stores Do You Want?

Many digital distributors offer the same core selection of stores, but be aware if you’re looking for one store or platform in particular (Beatport, Junodownload or perhaps a location or genre-specific store) you may need to make sure your distributor covers it.

Most distributors offer a list of stores, but be aware that due to the changing landscape of the digital music industry these lists will go out of date and can change regularly.

Again the best way to be 100% sure, is to get in touch with them and ask. It’s most likely that they will be able to send you their most up to date stores list too.

Payment

How you get paid by the distributor may affect your choice of which to go with. Generally most seem to pay into Paypal or a bank account, but the regularity of these payments and the threshold at which these payments happens varies.

Some will pay you right away, some will pay you weekly or monthly, and some may only pay you when you request it.

Thresholds can vary from zero, right up to needing a $50 profit or more before you can get paid. At MusicDiffusion payment are done under one month after request, with a threshold up at €50 (but this threshold may be downgraded by demand on your account).

Level of Support

This may not be so much of an issue if you’re aware of what you’re getting yourself in for, but even for the experts, it’s handy to have responsive support staff.

Generally all platforms offer email support, often with response rates of around a day or two.
