Update: Important Google Play Changes

At MusicDiffusion, we are constantly working with digital music platforms to allow you to efficiently and easily share your music with your fans, wherever they are. We always strive to keep our artist community abreast of updates regarding the platforms they rely on to sell music and create fans. To keep our offer up to date, we are making changes in accordance with Google’s previously announced plan to replace Google Play Music with YouTube Music.

In anticipation of this next product change, starting this month and as a member of MusicDiffusion, you should make sure the content you have been delivered on Google Play Music, is also available on YouTube and YouTube Music which you can select on our distribution dashboard (any delivery of your music on new stores/platforms is free of charge with MusicDiffusion). If you have already distribute your music on all stores, you have nothing to do 🙂

What about reports?

Your Google Play Music reports and historical payments will remain under the same name in your MusicDiffusion monthly sales reports “My Sales.” You will receive the remaining reports for Google Play Music performance on your music in the same place as before. Once you have received all of the remaining reports, all new performance reports will be available in YouTube Music. As a reminder, reports are generally sent within two months.

As always, MusicDiffusion is there for our artists every step of the way! If you still have questions about the above news, please don’t hesitate to contact our support team.

And don’t forget, while distributing your music on YouTube Music makes your releases available as “artistic titles” on the platform, you can also take advantage of YouTube’s content identification system and generate income when your music is used in other users’ videos, for free!

Spotify celebrates 100 million Premium subscribers

Daniel Ek’s company shares first quarter 2019 financial performance and they have millions of reasons to paint the town ‘green’.
When announcing 2019 first quarter results, Spotify confirmed a very important milestone: 100 million Premium subscribers.

The Swedish company has accomplished some important challenges during the first months of the year. As described in this report, overall monthly active users (MAUs) grew 26% year to year, up to 217 miliones.

Spotify is present in 79 paesi, being Europe and North America the leading regions. The last achievement stands in India, where the streaming service launched in February. Since then, it has reached 2 million users in the country, competing with local devices like Gaana or JioSaavn.

As for Spotify Premium users, they have experienced a 32% shift in a year. The company explains this growth in the promotions they have made in the US and Canada, as well as the expansion in Google Home Mini.

Nowadays, Spotify is the most powerful music streaming in the world, at least in terms of users. Apple Music base is estimated to be 50 million MAUs, though it overtakes Spotify in the US in terms of Premium subscribers.

Are streaming services resurrecting the music industry?

Music streaming services are shaping the most important changes in the industry, to the point of living a second digital music revolution.
When the IFPI Global Music Report 2019 was published, all headlines remarked one word, the term that is changing everything; not only in the music industry but also in the whole entertainment sector: streaming. According to the document, the global music recorded market grew by 9.7% in 2018 e 37% of revenues came from paid streaming services. This trend is expected to evolve in the next years…But how? Is streaming the lifejacket that the music industry needed to survive to the crisis it’s been immersed in the last two decades?

One thing is true, the future of streaming services is promising Goldman Sachs analyst Lisa Yang forecasts that the whole music industry will account for $131 billion by 2030. The recorded music industry will represent $41 billion of these earnings thanks largely to the growth of streaming, so it will generate $34 billion of that, from which $28 billion will come from paid subscription and $6 billion from ad-supported streaming services.

Millennials have the power

Let’s get back to 2019. Currently, music streaming sales are dominated by top R&B and hip-hop artists, such as Drake (the most played artist in Spotify last year), Kendrick Lamar or Cardi B. Millennials and Centennials are the two generations helping to revitalize the industry. On the one hand, they spend on music more money than other age groups. Also, they are the ones streaming more music on their smartphones. According to Goldman Sachs predictions, the proportion of people streaming music in their devices will evolve from 18% to 37% in 2030 in developed markets and from 3% to 10% in emerging ones.

Experts, professionals and technology companies and giants have their eyes on Latin American countries or India. Why would YouTube Music, Pandora, Amazon or Spotify have so much interest in these regions? Because of their potential and the fact that streaming is making us more glocalized.

Yes, streaming drives a new era of growth

When Spotify beat the stock market, Business Inside leaked a letter written by David Fiszel, one of the platform investors, explaining that the streaming business model is expected to grow indefinitely, as well as being the future of music distribution. By now, it is also altering the whole music creation and monetization process… which are not a walk in the park precisely.

Streaming revenues may not grow so drastically as predicted by Goldman Sachs. MIDiA Research 2018-2026 Streaming Music Forecasts states that 2018 has been the last year of considerable growth in streaming revenues. From this year and on, they will drop from 29% to 7% in 2026, especially in mature markets like the US, Australia or the United Kingdom. Moreover, the US and the UK will still dominate the streaming market, though emerging countries like Brazil, Mexico or India will scale to the top 15 positions.

So, the answer to the headline’s question is yes, we are living an unstoppable revolution in the music industry and streaming is the gasoline impulsing it. A picture is worth a thousand words so here you can see an example to illustrate this declaration.

How MusicDiffusion is changing the game of Music Distribution?

We are musicians, and we have created the MusicDiffusion platform for musicians. We believe in artists and we want them to have the control on their careers, so we launched MusicDiffusion knowing the real struggle that indies artists and music labels face daily. And it’s maybe because MusicDiffusion is not hold by financials like our concurrents, but by musicians like its members, that we finally changed so much the game of music distribution!

First, we have contributed to reduce the costs of music distribution to everyone. MusicDiffusion was the first music distributor to create a free plan to distribute music out to Spotify, and the first digital distribution to distribute music over all major stores and platforms at a unique fee of 2,99 Euros by track, when the same service cost at least more than 30 Euros by year with concurrents like TuneCore.

Also we create the first unbeatable unlimited distribution at 15,99 Euros/Year that permit to anyone to release as much music, artists and labels through MusicDiffusion. This when our concurrents like Distrokid propose to release unlimited release just for one artist at 19,99 Euros/Year. Also, at MusicDiffusion, we are the first music distribution to have any hidden fees as many of our concurrents. Here, Shazam, ISRC Codes, Youtube Monetization and future stores are free, as some extra and useful services for creators, like online website creation and more!

We won’t talk about those new all free music distribution service out there… Your music do not deserve this. What will you do when these services may close while keeping your royalties as it has already happened many times? How could you handle a great service that cost a lot for no incomes ? It’s mathematic and that’s why at MusicDiffusion we believe in a low-cost platform that will still be there when you will need your royalties to be paid.

MusicDiffusion pricing plans
MusicDiffusion has considerably reduce music distribution costs with its 3 unbeatable plans.

With MusicDiffusion, we didn’t only reduce the costs of music distribution, we also changed the way it shall be done. We wanted since our beginnings to create tools that are important for any artist. Like to be able to complete all the copyrights lines, publishing or credits informations about your songs. We also wanted our artists to be able to publish the lyrics of their songs on supported stores when. For musicians that we are, this seemed to be a must-have when other platforms was not care. We are happy to see that this way of think from MusicDiffusion is now inspiring leaders of the music distribution industry like TuneCore, that recently added these important informations into their dashboard as you can see below.

MusicDiffusion inspiring TuneCore for their Dashboard
TuneCore new Dashboard Vs. MusicDiffusion Dashboard
You may see that TuneCore added now functions that was on MusicDiffusion since our beginnings.

So, since we launched MusicDiffusion, we have continuously improved and adding services for our creators members which are now thousands over the world. If we help them to reach their goals on their music journey, we didn’t expect they help us to build one of the fastest growing community, permitting us today to make a real impact in the global music distribution. So thanks to all creators using MusicDiffusion!

Songflow shutting down, how to transfert your music catalog to MusicDiffusion for free?

After Zimbalam, another music distributor has shutting down some weeks ago: Songflow. It might come as a shock to some music creators out there, but for us, this was not a surprise.
At MusicDiffusion, we think that offering 100% free or giving 100% of royalties to music creators is only a marketing model, but not a long business term model that the music distribution requires.
You want to be paid your royalties, now, and also in the future, without changing your distributor every year right? You also want your music distributor to regularly be able to invest and propose you new tools and new ways to make money with your Music.

With a heavy heart I am sharing the news with you that Songflow will cease to operate in early 2019. Our aim with Songflow was to offer you, the independent artist, a solution to distribute and earn money with your music in a simple, honest and user friendly way. From day one we’ve been amazed by how all of you have used our platform to promote your music and establish yourselves in the digital music age. Yet, it has become clear that continuing to operate Songflow, while at the same time offering a top tier service, is becoming commercially and operationally unattainable – Thomas van Wijk

Obviously for the people who already were using Songflow platform, they will have to find a new home
At MusicDiffusion, the transfer of any catalog is free. So Songflow users can already move their catalog to MusicDiffusion by create an account in a minute, and then by upload their tracks with the same ISRC codes in their dashboard. When this is did, they just need to contact our team here that will proceed to the update of any catalog to MusicDiffusion for free.
If you need to deliver new music to the stores with us, find out our plans and prices here. But be sure that with MusicDiffusion, you are running with the best and cheapest music distributor on the market as partner, and the only music distribution platform builded by artists and musicians for artists and musicians. Visualizing 40 Years of Music Industry Sales

THE CHANGES OF MUSIC INDUSTRY

The record industry has seen a lot of change over the years, and especially music sales.

The 8-tracks system took a short-lived run at the dominance of vinyl, cassettes faded away as compact discs took the world by storm, and through it all, the music industry saw its revenue continue to climb. That is, until it was digitally disrupted.

Looking back at four decades of U.S. music industry sales data is a fascinating exercise as it charts not only the rise and fall the record company profits, but seismic shifts in technology and consumer behavior as well.

THE LONG FADE OUT

For people of a certain age group, early memories of acquiring new music are inexorably linked to piracy. Going to the store and purchasing a $20 disc wasn’t even a part of the thought process. Napster, the first widely used P2P service, figuratively skipped the needle off the record and ended years of impressive profitability in the recording industry.

Physical vs. Digital sales

Napster was shut down in 2002, but the genie was already out of the bottle. Piracy’s effect on the industry was immediate and stark. Music industry sales, which had been experiencing impressive year-over-year growth, began a decline that would continue for 15 years.

THE RINGTONE ERA

While acquiring music was as easy opening Limewire on your desktop computer, transferring that new T-Pain track to a flip-phone wasn’t a seamless experience.

This brief gap in technology – before smartphones hit mass adoption – brought us the ringtone era. Distribution was controlled by mobile carriers, so ringtones were a comfortable gateway for the record industry to get a taste for digital-based revenue. In 2008 alone, they injected over a billion dollars of revenue into an industry that was getting used to gloomy forecasts.

PADDLING UPSTREAM

Though services like Spotify and Pandora haven’t replaced the money pipeline that CD sales provided, they have reversed the industry’s tailspin. For the first time this millennium, record industry posted an increase in revenue for two consecutive years (and likely a third in 2018).

It took a while for consumers to warm up to paying for a premium music subscription, but today, there’s a solid basis for optimism. Music streaming is now the most common format for music in the United States, and the RIAA reports that streaming now makes up nearly half of the market.

Music Streaming Subscriptions

THE END OF PHYSICAL FORMAT?

Gone are the days when people would line up at the music shop for a hot new release. In fact, CD sales are down 80% in the past decade. Today, physical format sales only account for 17% of the industry’s revenue.

There is, however, one bright spot in physical format segment: vinyl. In 2017, vinyl sales hit 25-year high after making a slow and steady comeback.

“Vinyl is written in stone. I think if it’s made it for 120 years now, it’s here forever.”
