5 scams that unsigned artists must avoid

MusicDiffusion is here to distribute your songs on all platforms worldwide, as helping you promote your music, develop your career and hopefully become a music star!

Unfortunately there are bad people out there who see ambitious unsigned artists like you as something to be exploited and ripped off. These people are evil and you shouldn’t ever have anything to do with them. So here are a few tips on what to look out for before crying hard.

1. Pay up front to be represented

Managers and agents are paid by commission, in simple words, they only get paid if the artist they represent gets paid. So if someone says they want to represent you as your agent or manager, but that they first need to be paid in advance of doing anything, they are clearly not a manager or agent, but certainly a scam.

2. Pay to get connected with some persons in the industry

There are people out there who claim to be artistic agents or to know some, and dare to request you to pay to get you connected or even get a deal. These people are what are known as LIARS. Artistic agents are the people in labels who discover and sign new artists, working with them to help create and develop their career. They do not get paid by unsigned artists. Never. Anyone who suggests otherwise is simply not a profesionnal. Real artistic agents find exciting new artists and in fact, it would make more sense that they help their artist financialy for prove their trust in their art than request money instead!

3. Buying tickets for a mystery unsigned artist promotion night

This is a scam that appears from time to time – unsigned artists are approached by a supposed promoter who has supposedly selected them to appear in a night of unsigned artists. What the artist has to do is buy tickets to guarantee his/her appearance, and he/she will never see the money again or hear any more about this supposed great gig. There are lots of nights out there for unsigned artists and you should absolutely be trying to appear on it, but make sure the gig is legit before getting involved.

4. Charges for playing live in concert

Gigging is an essential activity for almost all artists. It’s very important to not get ripped off in the process. Some venues may determine their fee based on how many fans you bring along, and there may be a minimum guarantee of tickets you have to sell. If that’s the case, once you pass that minimum you must have the ability to actually earn a share of the money from the sales you bring in. And that break-even point has to be completely clear. Think about what is realistic for you and what make you comfortable with.

5. If it sounds too good to be true…

Then it probably is. Building a successful music career is a long hard slog. The rewards can be varied and immense, but they have never come to anyone without lots and lots of hard work. So if someone is offering something that seems a little too easy, just too good to be true, be on your guard. And if they’re asking for your money up front, without the guarantee of anything, be even more careful. Being a successful musician is hard enough as it is, don’t make things harder for yourself by falling victim to a scam from a bad person.

What is the difference between Mastering and Mixing? – 5 steps to create a successful song

With the development of home studios and self-production, more and more artists perform their music independently without the help of anyone. And although there are hundreds of ways to produce a title, certain steps are essential for a song to have a clean, professional rendering.

What are the mandatory steps to make a title suitable for all media?
What are the differences between Mixing and Mastering?

Here are the 5 key phases to produce a successful song 👇

1 – Composition and Arrangements

At the base of any process of musical creation, composition is the foundation of your music. It is during this stage that you will create melodies for your song. Armed with a MIDI keyboard, or just a music software, this step is crucial and lays the foundation for your song. It’s up to you to decide the chords, the instruments and the rhythm of this first phase. As a result of your composition, you will probably make some arrangements. Whether partially reworking the melody by modifying measures, or adding atmospheres through effects, this complementary step seems rather natural within the creative process. To conclude, the arrangement comes to refine the color of your composition according to your artistic desires.

2 – The Record

Whether for instruments or voice recordings, the recording represents the logical continuation of the composition. It is during this stage that you will record your voice, those of potential partners or even your latest instruments. In order to produce an optimal result, it is advisable to benefit from a quality material according to what you want to record. It’s about capturing the best of your voice or instruments to showcase them as you wish. Finally, do not neglect the acoustics of the room in which you record, as well as any plug-in to enjoy an optimal sound.

Note that following this step, it is possible to arrange your voice, which is also more and more in the music industry. You can then choose to mitigate imperfections as well as change drastically with voice modification methods. Accuracy, tempo, vibrato, … everything can still be changed after recording.

3 – The Mix

Once your compositions and recordings made, you now have different tracks superimposed. You must then harmonize them so that the overall result is as audible as possible. This is the mixing stage.

Depending on the color you want to give to your title, you will give more importance to one track than another. You can thus favor a voice rather than a guitar by modifying the harmony of the tracks.

More concretely, you need to create a balance in the frequencies and placement of the sounds of your different tracks. For smooth mixing, the level of each instrument, whether it is Audio, or MIDI, is required. Subsequently, you can use special effects, such as reverb, delay, or echo. Always in order to give depth to your song, it is finally advisable to use filters like the equalizer (equalizer or EQ).

The mixing stage can be done by yourself, although it is always good to have an outside opinion on the final rendering of your music. For a mix to be successful, it is advisable to change the listening support, in order to have a concrete overview of your music from different angles.

At the end of this stage, your song must appear to you complete, the listening must be pleasant, and each element must be audible.

4 – The Mastering

Just like a layer of varnish on your painting, the mastering stage comes last in order to sublimate your production. The mastering should not mitigate the errors of the mix but add depth, and especially make it audible in good quality on all types of media: radio, TV, streaming, CD, vinyl, nightclub…

Even the best mixes can not replace a mastering done by a sound professional with experience. Mastering, also called “pre-mastering”, must also harmonize the titles of a project. It should not be that too great disparities are heard between the different titles of the same album.

But how to master a sound?

It is not possible for everyone to be able to master music. First of all, this requires a professional equipment with a perfectly designed room for acoustics and speakers at more than 5000 € per unit. You must also have good ears, as well as a consistent experience. So this is an art, which is unfortunately not for everyone.

You still have several solutions:

  1. You stick to a mix of good qualities if you do not want to exploit your project on a large scale.
  2. Outsource the mastering stage to a recognized professional. You can also do this remotely by sending all the tracks of your project. However, the cost of this service is very expensive (count more than 100 euros per title for a complete mastering of quality).
  3. Use an on-line mastering service like Landr or Moja (e-mastering). Of much less good quality, services like Landr offer an economic alternative to the mastering realized by professionals of the sound. Achieved by artificial intelligence, this may represent a happy medium for an amateur artist lacking resources.

5 – The Distribution

After these different steps and once your mastering in your pocket, now it’s time to distribute your title! Digital distribution in streaming, CD or vinyl pressing, radio airplays, TV or in sound locations, … the choice is yours.

This decision must however be taken according to the mode of listening favored by your audience. Namely, if your listeners consumes music rather physically or digitally, and what places or platforms online they frequent.

With the advent of streaming, especially characterized by inexpensive distribution costs unlike CDs, it is now relevant to offer your music on platforms like Deezer, Spotify or Apple Music. For this, many distributors can meet your needs at variable costs.

Check out here how to choose the best music distribution, and our comparative of them!

Music Publishing Explained for Musicians

Are you a songwriter, artist or producer looking to make extra money from your songs ? We would be surprised if you answered no to that ! Of course, you can go it alone, but once you get to a certain point in your music career, you might want to get some help. This is where a music publisher comes in.

music-publishing-explained-for-musicians-1

A GUIDE TO MUSIC PUBLISHING

WHAT DOES A MUSIC PUBLISHER DO?

Music publishers can help you earn money from your songs in a number of ways and will actively look for ways to use your music on your behalf.

The most common way that a publisher will use your music on your behalf is by licensing your tracks out to be used in the media, including TV, films and adverts. This is called synchronisation or ‘sync’. Your publisher will also be responsible for issuing the licenses and making sure you get a good deal.

Publishers generally charge on a commission basis, which usually works in your favour, as they will only receive income if you do. This gives them the incentive to secure you as much income as possible. The percentage that they take depends on your contract with them and you should always seek legal advice when negotiating an agreement.

Alternatively, another way some music publishers help artists is by finding people for you to collaborate with and co-write with or for.

Finally, a publisher’s role also includes collecting the income from uses and the licenses that they issued. They ensure that you get the money that is due to you and that what you receive is correct.

music-publishing-explained-for-musicians-2

THE BENEFITS OF MUSIC PUBLISHING

Sync can be a useful form of income, offering you not only royalties but also an upfront fee, usually in the hundreds or thousands of pounds, as well as a decent amount of exposure.

Over the years, especially since Napster (You surely know that story..) sync has become more and more important for artists, so it’s worth looking into. Sync usually involves signing to a publisher and/or record label.

In addition to sync deals, by collaborating and co-writing you will be able to add more songs to you repertoire, particularly ones that are perhaps slightly different from your usual style. This can be beneficial as it gives you a more varied catalogue, opening you up to more opportunities.

There is also the direct benefit you get from it, which is not just in songwriting but any form of collaboration that is cross promotion. If you collaborate, then you’re exposing yourself to your partner’s audience, which should get you more fans.

COPYRIGHT AND PUBLISHERS

The role of the Publisher is based on copyright, which is the rights that you have for your music.

Copyright is split into two main sections: copyright in the song (known as publishing rights) and copyright in the sound recording (known as master rights). The publisher only deals with the publishing right, which is the songwriting side and includes the music and lyrics.

Traditionally, a record label will own the master right, which is basically the right to use a particular recording of that song, but if you’re a self-releasing artist or producer then you will most likely own this right yourself.

In a publishing agreement, you will generally assign the publisher your publishing copyright, to use and license your songs on your behalf. This means you are no longer allowed to do this yourself.

DO IT YOURSELF

If you’re not ready for a publisher or if you’re not interested in assigning your rights, you can do it yourself or register to MusicDiffusion publishing administration. MusicDiffusion which is associated with Most Wanted Music, one of the greatest independent Music Label, can also help you to bring you placement opportunities and to collect your rights for a small fee, read more about here.

Music distribution: What every artist needs to know

Music Distribution is about making an impact more than making something available.

Even if you’re a Grammy-winner putting out your 10th studio album, you need distribution for your music.

The songs have to move from you to your listeners. The problem is your listeners access music in dozens of different ways, in hundreds of different places. That’s where music distribution comes in.

Let’s break it down.

What is music distribution?

According Google, “distribution” is:

  • the action of sharing something out among a number of recipients.
  • the action or process of supplying goods to stores and other businesses that sell to consumers.

Music Distribution is both of those things. A third-party such as MusicDiffusion takes your music and handles:

  • Digital distribution, making your music available to download stores and streaming services platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora Premium, Amazon, etc.
  • Monetization services, helping you earn money for the usage of your music on YouTube, Facebook, in TV shows, and more.

Why do I need a distributor for my music?

Your should ask yourself “Why can’t an unsigned artist get their songs onto Spotify and Apple Music directly?”

To put it clear, you as the artist are not their customer. Your fans are their customers. These companies don’t want to take on the substantial customer service and development burden of dealing directly with millions of musicians. That’s where distributors come in.

At MusicDiffusion, our principle client is YOU — and we create the systems, artist tools, communication channels, and informational resources you need so you can upload your music ONCE and make it available worldwide in a successful way.

Imagine having to create separate accounts and upload your music and artwork files for each and every digital music platform! Imagine the accounting headaches! Imagine the emails in your inbox!

MusicDiffusion serves as a buffer between the creator of the music and the outlets that make that music available. But more importantly for you, we save you — the artist or label — a ton of time and work.

The eight most valuable aspects of music distribution through MusicDiffusion

1. A wide partner network of DSPs and media outlets

You want to make sure that when your music gets out there, it gets OUT there, worldwide, in every possible place listeners are looking for you. MusicDiffusion will deliver your music to all major stores and platforms worldwide, so you can rest easy that you’ve got coverage.

But let’s be real. To varying degrees based on your genre and location, most of your activity is going to come from a handful of giants.

Some of the most important digital music services in the United States and Europe are:

  1. Spotify – The leader in interactive music streaming, with both paid subscription and ad-supported options.
  2. Apple Music – Apple’s powerful on-demand streaming service, with a heavy focus on curated playlists.
  3. iTunes – The biggest player in the music download business since its launch in 2004.
  4. Amazon – The undisputed giant of online retail has both download and subscription streaming options.
  5. Google Play – The easiest way to access digital music with an Android device.
  6. Tidal – Offering high-fidelity digital music and exclusive content at a premium to subscribers.
  7. YouTube – Though known as a video platform, YouTube is actually one of the dominant players in music streaming and discovery.
  8. Pandora Premium – The paid interactive offering from the popular internet radio service.
  9. Deezer – An intuitive interactive streaming service competing for global listeners.

The thing is that Platforms rise and fall in popularity with some frequency, so you need to be everywhere.

2. Speedy music delivery to digital platforms

MusicDiffusion has long-standing relationships with the big digital music platforms, and we’ve developed a distribution system that combines fast delivery with manual (human!) inspection of every release, so if you spelled a track title incorrectly or listed the wrong publisher for a cover song, we’ll catch it!

Yes, MusicDiffusion can deliver your music to our digital partners in a heartbeat, but are you really rushing your release so quickly that you need it live RIGHT NOW with zero strategy?

Let’s plan this out. Let’s spend some time so you can take advantage of all the opportunities MusicDiffusion can offer, including:

[But okay okay, sure, if you just got the masters for your album and you want the music live by Saturday, we’re not going to say no.]

3. Trust and reliability

In 2018 we revolutionized the independent music industry, giving independent artists and music labels their first chance to reach a worldwide audience on their own terms and at the best price.

Since our founding we’ve knocked down the barriers to digital distribution, as well as:

All of this is done with one mission in mind: empower independent artists and music labels, let them keep their rights and decide what’s best for their own, and pay them every single month. We’re immensely proud, and every day we feel honored by the thousands musicians who’ve entrusted us with one of the most important things in their lives, their own music.

4. A sensible fee structure

There’s a cycle of growth and decline for every music release. This is the nature of things.

It’s not easy to pay a large annual fee in order to keep your music on digital download and streaming platforms once sales for that older material are on the decline. Those annual fees can add up; the larger your catalog gets, the more you pay each year to keep all your music available.

You definitely don’t want to feel the pressure ten years down the line to drop another few hundred bucks in annual fees, otherwise your older stuff which is no longer selling that well is gonna get removed!

The smarter approach is to release a lot of music, build your catalog over a lifetime, put all that music to work for you, and NOT worry about annual fees. That’s why MusicDiffusion partners with you; we only make money when you do.

5. Robust services

With MusicDiffusion’s standard distribution, you get much more than digital distribution to outlets like iTunes and Spotify.

With MusicDiffusion, you get digital distribution plus:

  • YouTube monetization
  • Shazam Recognization
  • sync licensing
  • free online marketing tools
  • and much more

With our MusicDiffusion Publishing package you get all of that plus worldwide publishing rights administration, helping you collect global publishing royalties that would otherwise be very difficult (if not impossible) to collect without a publisher, including:

  • All mechanical royalties from Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming sites. These are generated from every single stream
  • All international mechanical royalties from download stores like iTunes. These are generated from every single sale
  • All performance royalties from streaming services (like Spotify), radio, TV, live concert performances and much more
  • Global YouTube publishing administration for any video on YouTube that contains your music
  • Hundreds of other sources of songwriting and publishing royalties from around the world

6. Clean and detailed metadata assurances

All indicators point to the fact that we’re approaching an era where digital outlets will demand correct and thorough details about every track on their platform, including songwriter info, publishing splits, and more.

Luckily for you, MusicDiffusion has been requesting this kind of information from our artist and label clients since its opening. While that might take you a few more minutes to complete the submission form, it also means you’ve taken care of something that will almost certainly be required by digital services down the line.

7. Curatorial and editorial reach

We don’t just send your music to our partners and wish you the best. We want to find the most noteworthy releases, the best new music, the overlooked gems of our catalog, and tell the world about it.

Here’s how:

  • Thousands of music-buyers and music professionals receive our Discover Music newsletter.
  • With our own famous music label Most Wanted Music, we also have a team that is dedicated to finding and promoting the best new releases to our digital partners’ editorial teams, seeking opportunities for official Spotify playlist placements, iTunes banners, and more. You can submit your music for consideration HERE.

8. Accessible artist support

We’re approachable. You can get a hold of us. We have a detailed online Help Center so you can get your questions answered 24/7. You can email us and we’ll respond quickly. And yes, you can chat directly with us (during business hours).

MusicDiffusion gives you so much more than just digital music distribution

We hope you’ll consider us for your next release, because yes, we can deliver your music lightning-fast to all major music platforms, but mostly for all the other stuff we provide — the extra reach, the manual metadata inspection, the strategic release options. That “other” stuff is anything but extra. That’s the way to making an impact more than simply making your music available.
